The Secret of Durian
The durian is the fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio. There are 30 recognised Durio species, at least nine of which produce edible fruit, with over 100 named varieties in Indonesia, 300 in Thailand and 100 in Malaysia. Durio zibethinus is the only species available in the international market: other species are sold in their local regions.
The King of all Durians - Musang King
Musang King (D197), which originated from Tanah Merah, Kelantan, is slightly oval in shape like a rugby ball and has a star-like pattern at the bottom. The Musang King durian, also known by its original name Raja Kunyit, has deep yellow flesh, broad and blunt spikes, a gap between the stem and thorns, as well as visible seams.
Today the price of durian is skyrocketing because of growing demand from China.
The popularity of Musang King durians has become to most sought after type of durian both locally and internationally due to its thick and creamy texture combined with a hint of bitterness, while the seeds are flat and tiny compared to other varieties. This aromatic and flavorful durian has captured the famed English broadcast journalist, who was seen enjoying his fair share of Musang King durian at a durian stall in SS2 as reported by the Star Online on 27 March 2017.
